PARALLAX View
is on-line gallery of animated GIF's + GIF/Super8 Action marking the opening of Parallax View on the streets of Venice during the opening days of the 55th International Art Exhibition of la Biennale di Venezia.

Parallax means a displacement in the position of an object, seen along two different eye-lines. As the objects are more close to the observer, the parallax grows. If the object is seen from distance, there is less parallax and the more universal features of the object come forth. The inspiration to make the project came from the title chosen by Massimiliano Gioni for the 55th International Art Exhibition of la Biennale di Venezia: Il Palazzo Enciclopedico / The Encyclopedic Palace.

Gioni introduced the choice of theme evoking the Italian-American artist Marino Auriti´s concept of Palazzo Enciclopedico, which on November 16, 1955 "filed a design with the US Patent office". It was supposed to be an imaginary museum that was meant “to house all worldly knowledge, bringing together the greatest discoveries of the human race, from the wheel to the satellite. Auriti’s plan was never carried out, (…), but the dream of universal, all-embracing knowledge crops up throughout history, as one that eccentrics like Auriti share with many other artists, writers, scientists, and prophets who have tried - often in vain - to fashion an image of the world that will capture its infinite variety and richness.”

PARALLAX View is following the encyclopaedic spirit of Auriti´s plan but at the same time working as a proof of the impossibility to build a comprehensive encyclopaedia or collection. From a close distance of big parallax, nothing is universal but looks more like a fragment of the body of an elephant. Seeing from far away, you can see the whole body of an elephant, but at the same time it starts to loose it´s singularity. To avoid the stillness and to celebrate individual works, we keep our project small. The scale we have chosen can also make it more interesting to see how Parallax View in comparison to Venice Biennale processes Il Palazzo Enciclopedico / The Encyclopedic Palace.

Auriti’s motto “Do Not Abuse Generosity” is our Leitmotif in the project.

THE CREATION OF GIF AT VENICESuper8 film performance with live soundtrack

FixC cooperative's members Juha van Ingen, Seppo Renvall and Jarkko Räsänen toured the Biennale opening days around art venues in Venice presenting an experimental, black & white, hand-developed super 8 film based on web-found GIF animations. We would like to thank warmly the creators of GIF's that were used in making of the film, and the following venues & wonderful people who hosted us:
